The coastline of KwaZulu-Natal is a surfers paradise. The water temperature is warm all year round and there are some fantastic waves far and wide. The most consistent surf is found in the winter months from May through to August. In the summer the swell tends to be a bit smaller with pleasurable surf available at the many beaches. Some of the surf spots in and around Durban are at New Pier, Bay of Plenty, Cave Rock, St.Mike's, Umdloti, Ballito and Alkanstrand.

Further to the south Port Elizabeth and East London have popular beaches with great waves. Hot spots in Port Elizabeth include King's Beach and "the pipe". If you drive south from Port Elizabeth you get to the world famous Jeffery's Bay that has one the finest surf on this planet, and fans from all over the world come to experience the great famous breaks around this area and St. Francis Bay. In East London, Nahoon Beach is popular among surfers.

The Garden Route is known for its natural beauty along with its spectacular beaches. Plettenberg Bay is one of South Africa's favourite surfing playgrounds. It is home to two incredible beaches, Robberg and Lookout. Victoria Bay just outside The Wilderness hosts many great surfing competitions.

Close to Cape Town there are some of the most famous surf spots in South Africa, among these are: Camps Bay, Clifton, Bloubergstrand, Hermanus and Muizenberg. On the West Coast, Elandsbaai has great swells and no crowds.
