More than 40 airlines are using the airport regularly, many of them connecting Johannesburg with direct flights to major cities around the world, including Europe, USA, Asia, South America and Australia. OR Tambo International Airport has been renamed twice in the last couple of years, and you may find people and publications still referring to it by it's previous names of Johannesburg International Airport or Jan Smuts. Cape Town international Airport, the second biggest in South Africa, is located around 20 km east from the city center of Cape Town. An alternative option is to fly international to Johannesburg and domestic from Johannesburg to Cape Town, a trip that takes around 1½ hours. Durban International Airport service both domestic and international flights, with regular scheduled services to Swaziland, Mozambique and Mauritius, but also to destinations outside of Africa. The airport handled four million passengers in 2005. A new airport is currently under construction at La Mercy, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Durban city center. The airport is called King Shaka International Airport and will replace the existing Durban International Airport. It is expected to open on May 1st, 2010, just over a month before the start of the soccer World Cup 2010. The remaining international airports are primarily used for domestic flights or flights to other African countries. Some of these airports are being upgraded to handle international flights in preparation for the 2010 World Cup. Among airports being upgraded are: Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ), Pietermaritzburg Airport, and Polokwane International Airport (PTG).
