Most overseas visitors to South Africa come primarily to experience the country's wildlife and the magnificent, unspoiled areas. The game reserves in South Africa are set in habits ranging from desert dunelands to shady, subtropical forests. There are 17 game reserves and one National Lake area administered by the South African Park. Among the game reserves, Kruger National Park is by far the most famous, it is also the biggest, and supports more species of wildlife than any of the others. There are also a number of privately owned game parks with luxury accommodation and a range of additional amenities.

With more than 3,000 kilometers (1,875 miles) of coastline, South Africa has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with clean, clear and warm water, and in many places protected by shark nets. There are beaches for different kind of water sports, like swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing. Especially along the coast of the Indian Ocean there are many really nice holiday resorts, and cities like Durban and Port Elizabeth are ideal for a family holiday by the sea.

For golfers, South Africa is an exciting place. There are more than 400 registered golf courses, some of them are among the best in the world. Furthermore South Africa's excellent climate makes golf a year round attraction. Visitors are welcome at most courses, but it is advisable to book a tee time in advance, and to ask for dress codes.

Among the tourist attractions are whale watching where you commonly can see the Southern Right Whale, but also other types of whales. Whales can be watched from Gansbaai in the south to St. Helena Bay on the west coast, with Hermanus in the center. The best time of year for whale watching is between July and October. Bird watching is another tourist attraction, there are over 900 bird species in South Africa.

Other tourist attractions include the Garden Route, the Drakensberg Mountains, San rock painting site, Soweto city, the Cape Wine Routes, the Blyde River Canyon, many historical sites, museums, the Tugela Falls (the world's second highest waterfall with a total drop of 947 meters), hiking, fishing and hunting.
