Pretoria is located in the north-east of South Africa approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Johannesburg. It is one of the country's three capitals, serving as the administrative and de facto national capital. The others are Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein, the juridical capital. Pretoria has a population of around 1 million. The city was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, and became the capital of the then Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. When the Union of South Africa was established in 1910, Pretoria was elected the capital, a position it de facto still has today in the Republic of South Africa. Pretoria is a very pleasant and cosmopolitan city, situated in the transitional area between the Highveld and the Bushveld. As a result of this location it has a particularly abundant variety of birdlife. You will find many significant buildings in Pretoria and some fascinating museums. The Transvaal Museum has many natural history displays. Also worth visiting are the Cultural History Museum and the Smuts Museum, just outside of town. Pretotia has quite a few open spaces where you can walk or mountain bike. Nearby is the Premier Game Reserve, next door to the Cullinan Diamond Mine, where the largest diamond in the world was found. Pretoria is also home to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa as well as the Pretoria Botanical Garden.
Pretoria does not have an international airport serving it, instead it makes use of the nearby OR Tambo International Airport, which is the airport at Johannesburg. Airport shuttles to Pretoria are available on the airport or can be pre-booked.
