East London, officially Buffalo City, is situated on the east coast of South Africa, less than 300 km. (185 mi.) from Port Elizabeth.

East London is situated on the east coast of South Africa, less than 300 km. (185 mi.) north of Port Elizabeth. East London was founded in 1847 as a British outpost called Fort Glamorgan. The city is overlooking the Indian Ocean. It has a great location between the Buffalo and the Nahoon Rivers and it forms the only deep water river port in the country. Today, the city has been officially renamed as Buffalo City, but many people still refer to it as East London. East London has a population of some 400,000, with over 1.4 million in the metropolitan area, making it the second largest city in the province of the Eastern Cape.

East London is at the northern end of a 300 kilometer (185 miles) stretch of coastline refereed to as the "Sunshine Coast" which has St Francis Bay at the southern end. The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its many kilometers of beautiful, unpolluted and un-crowded beaches. East London has long been a sought after tourist destination for local South Africans, and has now also become a popular destination for international tourists.

Some of the town attractions include the Calgary Transport Museum, which houses a fine collection of old and very old transport mediums. Fort Glamorgan, which is now a national monument, was founded in 1848 to provide quarters for the troops. The City Hall, in Oxford Street, is one of the proudest landmarks of the city. The East London Harbour is the only natural deep-water port South Africa has. There are restaurants along the waterfront, where you can enjoy a very affordable meal with a view of the harbour and the moored yachts right before you. You can also go on a river cruise from the harbour. Cove Rock is an impressive and unusual rock formation 16 km (10 mi) from East London and it is a great bird watching spot.

East London Airport (ELS) is a small but busy national airport that operates a number of domestic flights to Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg along with flights to other parts of South Africa.
