Table Mountain is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The highest point of Table Mountain is Maclears Beacon at 1,086 meters above sea level, about 19 meters higher than the cabel station, and at a distance of 45 to 60 minutes walk from the cabel car. The main feature of Table Mountain is a level plateau approximately 3 kilometers from side to side, surrounded by steep cliffs. The flat top of the mountain is often covered by clouds/mist/fog spilling over the top to form the "table cloth". The Table Mountain Cableway takes passengers from the lower cable station on Tafelberg Road, about 302 meters above sea level, to the plateau at the top of the mountain. The upper cable station offers views overlooking Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south. There are also curio shops, a restaurant and walking trails of varying lengths. Hiking on Table Mountain is popular, and a number of trails of varying difficulty are available. Plattklip Gorge, a prominent gorge up the center of the main table, is a popular and straightforward direct ascent to the summit. It takes about 2½ hours to get all the way up to the top, all depending on ones fitness. Table Mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, stretching from Signal Hill in the north to Cape Point in the south. The Park has an extraordinarily rich, diverse and unique fauna and flora, with rugged cliffs, steep slopes and sandy flats. The Table Mountain National Park is primarily an open access Park with only three points where conservation fees are payable, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders and Silvermine, the rest of the Park is open access and free for all to enjoy.
