A 45 minute drive from Cape Town will bring you to the Cape Wine regions where there are several different wine routes to choose from, and includes the towns such as Franschoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington as principal destinations on various of the wine routes. Most of the cellars along the routes offers wine tasting and sales and many of these have restaurants and picnic facilities. Some cellars offer tasting by appointment only. The most popular way of discovering the joys of South African wines is on a day trip from Cape Town, either self-drive or on an organized excursion by a local organizer. If you are particularly interested in wines one can easily spend several days, if not weeks, exploring the area and its wines, there are so many estates to visit. In all, there are 13 wine routes one can follow and 2,000 varieties of wine to sample. The oldest winery in South Africa on record is the Groote Constantia estate set in the Constantia Valley, situated between Cape Town and False Bay. Groote Constantia was established in 1685 and has today been divided into three estates, Groote Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwacchting, which are all worth a visit. The Constantia Winelands has its own wine route, being a small route it gives you more time to visit the cellars and taste the world famous red and white wine and fine dessert wines from this area. The Constantine Valley is also home to several top quality restaurants.
Stellenbosch was founded in 1679, and is the second oldest city in South Africa. Stellenbosch is today regarded as the wine capital of South Africa, and the Stellenbosch Wine Region is synonymous with high quality award winning wines. The wine route, "Route of the Cape", was opened in 1971 and has more than 60 wine estates along it, producing a large variety of red and white wines. Route 62, the worlds longest wine route, leads through some of South Africa's most fertile valleys, so not surprisingly three of South Africa's leading wine regions are found on this route. The Breede River gives life to the Robertson Wine Valley, about two hours drive from Cape Town, and to the Worcester Wine Valley. The third wine region along Route 62 is Klein Karoo, a large area with a relatively small production, and it is a place of extraordinary beauty, with ridges, peaks and lush valleys.
