The Kruger National Park lies across the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in the northeast of the country, just south of Zimbabwe and west of Mozambique. It is the largest game reserve in South Africa and covers almost 20,000 sq. km. (7,720 sq. mi.), and extends 350 km (217 mi) from south to north and 60 km (37 mi) from west to east. It now forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and with the Limpopo Park in Mozambique. Fences are already coming down to allow game to move freely in much the way it would have before man's intervention. When completed, the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park will cover 35,000 sq. km. (13,500 sq. mi.), 58% of it in South Africa, 24% in Mozambique and 18% in Zimbabwe.

The Kruger National Park is the primary destination in South Africa for many international tourists. Each year more than half a million visitors are registered. Kruger National Park is home to an impressive number of species, including 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals, among which are the "big five" animals to see (the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino).

The Kruger National Park is a self-drive destination with almost 2,000 km (1,250 mi) of roads throughout the park, out of which a third are tarred. The park has 8 main gates that allow entrance to different sections of the park. For the visitor there are numerous differently equipped restcamps, most of the scenically positioned. Within the park boundaries, travel is only allowed between sunrise and sunset. Speed limits are 50 km/h on tarred roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads. You must not get out of your car inside the Kruger National Park unless you reach a designated place like view points, picnic places or camps.

There are 7 private lodge concessions and 11 designated private safari lodges inside the Kruger National Park. Outside the park there are numerous lodges and camps where visitors can stay and enter the park for game drives. Staying in Kruger National Park or one of the surrounding private game reserves is ideal during a visit to South Africa. The safari and game lodges range from basic to super luxurious with en-suite bathroom facilities. The lodges have expert game ranges who will take you on morning and afternoon game drives and walking safaris tracking the wildlife in their natural habitat. If you are staying in one of the 7 lodge concessions the rangers may also take you on a night game drive.

The best time to see game is during the winter months (April to September), as water is restricted to rivers and waterholes, where wildlife gather. Visibility is also good as the vegetation is less dense. In the summer period (October to March) it often rains, but it is still lovely, everything is lush and green.
